Tensions between India and Pakistan escalated on Thursday with Islamabad terming India’s statement — that it had permitted 19 officials of Pakistan’s high commission to watch the ongoing T20 World Cup matches in India — as “misleading”.

India, however, stood by its statement and said it would grant permission to more Pakistan officials.

A Pakistan High Commission official, on condition on anonymity, said: “The high commission applied for (permission for) 34 officials to watch four matches — two in Kolkata and two in Mohali. They have so far given permission for only 10 officials, including the high commissioner.”

The official said permission has not yet been granted to its defence advisor, press counsellor, three political counsellors, naval advisor, air force advisor and protocol assistants.

The official added: “India is hosting this T20 World Cup but is not willing to allow the officials to be present at venues where our team is playing.” New Delhi, however, said the 19 officials were permitted to travel despite Islamabad not furnishing details till Wednesday.

Indian officials said Pakistan sent a revised list and an itinerary only on Thursday and the process to grant permission to more officials is on.

India’s external affairs ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup had earlier said: “Pakistan has not informed the government of the itinerary for the proposed travel, as required by bilateral practice. This was despite repeated reminders over the past few days. However, considering the occasion, 19 approvals were issued as a gesture. We have urged that the agreed requirements are met (by Pakistan) so that the rest of the requests can be processed,” Swarup had said.

Pakistan played against Bangladesh at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Wednesday and will face India at the same venue on March 19.
