India win first league match in Kabaddi

india Updated: Dec 02, 2006 20:43 IST

The four-time champions carved out a comfortable 40-21 victory to launch their campaign on a convincing note at the Aspire Sports centre.

The Indians managed four bonus points and 2 Lona to record a first half score of 24-14 and then clinched the match in style with a final scoreline of 40-21.

The Indians will now take on arch rivals Pakistan in their next league match on Monday and a victory will virtually ensure them a place in the final.

The tournament is played on a round-robin basis with the two top teams qualifying for the final.

However, it was a contrasting story in Sepak Takraw in which they started their campaign on a losing note against the strong Malaysian side suffering a 0-3 defeat in the preliminary Group B league match at the Al Saad Indoor hall.

The Indian men could never really match their strong opponents as they went down tamely.

The Malaysians showed no mercy as they spanked the Indians by 21-7, 21-10 in the first regulation and then maintained their stranglehold with a 21-12, 21-7 victory in the second regulation to tighten the noose on their hapless opponents.

The third regulation turned out to be a cakewalk for the Malaysians, who recorded a facile 21-0, 21-0 victory.

The Indians will take on Myanmar in their next Group B league match on December 3, 2006 while the women's team will launch their campaign with a tie against Thailand.
