Indian food, fashion take over Toronto street

The fourth annual Festival of South Asia - sometimes dubbed as Taste of Little India - brought to this city the varied cuisines of the subcontinent.

The normally busy Gerrard street was closed to traffic during the weekend for the two-day festival and over 100 Indian restaurants, clothing shops and jewellery stores did business there.

"We wanted to show the diversity even within ourselves," Subbu Chintaluri, one of the event coordinators, was quoted as saying in The Star.

People were seen busy tasting different Indian dishes, browsing through the clothing boutiques and hunting for bargains on Bollywood DVDs and CDs.

An enticing spice medley wafted through the air, encouraging the crowds to keep eating.

"It was a delightful surprise to see so many people open to trying something new," Chintaluri said.

Going by the popularity, the organisers are seriously thinking of extending the festival.

"We are planning to extend it to three days in the coming years," Chintaluri said.
