Indian restaurants shine

Here’s another feather in India’s (chef) cap. Two Indian restaurants — Bukhara and Dum Pukht — have made it to The Miele Guide’s list of Asia’s Top 20 restaurants for 2010/2011. The coveted list — drawn by an international panel comprising reputed critics, food writers, a public vote and a special jury — was announced at an exclusive casino-royale themed dinner in Macau Wednesday night.

The Guide placed Bukhara at ITC Maurya, Delhi, fourteenth on the celebrated list, while Dum Pukht, Mumbai, bagged the seventeenth position. “We are extremely humbled at this honour. We thank everyone who has travelled far to savour the Dum Pukht and Bukhara experience,” said Manisha Bhasin, executive chef at ITC Maurya.

BiryaniTopping the list is the Singaporean restaurant Iggy’s, followed by L’Atelier de Joel Robuchon, Hong Kong and Robuchon a Galera, Macau. This year’s edition of the annual list features 450 restaurants across 17 Asian countries. The votes, totalling to over a lakh, came from 98 countries across the world.

Hong Kong lays claim to having six restaurants in the list, the most for any country. Japan, with 56 restaurant entries, reconfirms its position as Asia’s dining haven. This year’s list also sees newcomers like Cilantro in Malaysia and Tipping Club in Singapore.
