An Indian in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has been sentenced to one month's imprisonment for threatening to commit suicide.

According to police, the unnamed Indian barged into the office of his company in Ras Al Khaimah Tuesday and threatened to kill himself with a knife unless he was given his six months' unpaid wages.

A police team engaged the Indian in a discussion and then quickly overpowered him. In the process the Indian was slightly injured.

He was produced in a local court, which charged him with attempting to commit suicide and sentenced him to one month in jail, the Gulf News reported.

The court also referred the issue of unpaid wages to the labour department.
