A 45-year-old Indian woman has been arrested at the international airport in Colombo for possessing cocaine, police said on Sunday.
"The woman arrested with cocaine is an Indian national," a Sri Lankan Police Narcotic Bureau official said.
"She had already been produced before the Negombo Magistrate," the official told PTI.
The woman arrived on board a flight from India on Thursday morning and was apprehended by the narcotic wing of the Sri Lankan police at the Katunayake Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo.
Senior DIG and Police Narcotic Bureau Chief Nimal Lewke said this was the first time that such a large stash of cocaine has been seized.
According to Lewke, around 480 gms of cocaine worth SLR 7 million was found in the possession of the woman.
Noting that measures will be taken to inform the Indian officials about the incident, the officer said that the woman visited the island nation on two occasions earlier.
"This is the first time that such a large consignment has been seized. The most commonly used drug is heroin. Cocaine is very expensive. One gm of cocaine is worth around 15,000 SLR. We were able to detect the stash because of the skilled officers attached to the anti-narcotics unit," Lewke said.
