Indians disappoint on Day One of Youth Olympics

Indian athletes opened their campaign in the inaugural Youth Olympics on a disappointing note with most of them failing to get past the preliminary round and the lone weightlifter finishing fifth in Singapore on Sunday.

Indian athletes opened their campaign in the inaugural Youth Olympics on a disappointing note with most of them failing to get past the preliminary round and the lone weightlifter finishing fifth in Singapore on Sunday.

Only shuttler Sunil Kumar Prannoy produced an impressive performance by winning both his group matches.

Prannoy defeated Lucas Claerbout of France and Coke Dennis of Jamaica with identical 2-0 results in Pool C.

The second Indian shuttler in fray, Sai Praneeth, however, lost to Huang Chao of Singapore 12-21, 21-18, 17-21 in a Pool H match.

Weightlifter Matsa Santoshi finished fifth in girls' 48kg final with a total lift of 150kg (65+85) at the Toa Payoh Sports Hall. Chinese Tian Yuan won the gold with a total lift of 190kg (85+105).
