Indians shine at Physics Olympiad

Indian students won two golds and three bronze medals at the 37th International Physics Olympiad, in Singapore, Raghu Mahajan, Mehul Deepak Tikekar, Divyanshu Jha, Neha Jayesh Rambhia, and Harish Ravi, were among the prize winners.

Indian students won two golds and three bronze medals at the 37th International Physics Olympiad, which concluded in Singapore, an official said on Tuesday.

"The five-member Indian team secured two gold medals and three bronze medals at the 37th International Physics Olympiad held in Singapore form July 8 to July 17," according to the National Science Olympiad coordinator Vijay Singh of the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education.

Raghu Mahajan of Chandigarh and Mehul Deepak Tikekar of Mumbai were the gold medal winners while Divyanshu Jha of Patna, Neha Jayesh Rambhia of Mumbai and Harish Ravi of Bangalore bagged the bronze medals, he said.

All the five students have joined the IITs this academic year while Mahajan also topped the IIT-JEE, Singh said. A total of 93 countries had registered in this world event, of which only six countries fared better than India, Singh said.

The International Physics Olympiad started in 1967 while Indian participation in the event began in 1998.

Indian students also secured three silver and one bronze at the International Biology Olympiad, which concluded in Argentina on July 16.
