Indira Gandhi, Sardar Patel remembered

india Updated: Nov 01, 2006 16:18 IST

“INDIRAJI WAS Shakti incarnate, she broke down Pakistan’s arrogance with the creation of Bangladesh and came out with flying colours whenever the country faced any problem,” said City Congress president Pramod Tandon.

“She also carried out many a programme for the development of the country. Credit for the green revolution, satellite programme, network of Doordarshan Kendras across the country and our nuclear programme goes to her,” Tandon said while addressing the Congress workers here on the occasion of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s 22nd death anniversary on Tuesday.

Tandon also remembered the country’s first Home Minister Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel on his birth anniversary. Patel, who was instrumental in integrating the princely states into the Indian union, was really a man of steel, hence Mahatma Gandhi had bestowed him the title of ‘Sardar’, Tandon added.

The Congress leader also said that his party would not allow the evil designs of the RSS and the BJP for creating a communal divide in the City to succeed.

Earlier, the Congress workers offered flower tributes to Indira Gandhi and Sardar Patel. Tandon also administered an oath of  ‘servicing the downtrodden while maintaining national integrity, communal harmony and brotherhood’ at the Indira Pratima Square. The workers also observed a two-minute silence, a party release said here on Tuesday.
