In a suspected case of honour killing, a youth was allegedly strangled to death by his father-in-law and seven others on Saturday night in Indore's Malviya Nagar. The incident took place around 8:30pm.

According to police sources, Hemendra Dongre fell in love with a girl called Archana when they were studying at Vindhyachal College in Mhow. They married each other around a year ago despite stiff opposition from girl's family.

On Saturday afternoon, Archana’s brother Chintu invited her home. The main accused Parasnath Atroliya, a zonal officer of the Indore municipal corporation, and seven others dragged the couple out of the house and strangled Hemendra in full public view.

They hit him repeatedly with stones till he died. They also brutally assaulted Archana and hit her stomach with stones. The accused, later, fled the scene.

The neighbours brought the couple to Bombay Hospital for treatment. Dongre, however, succumbed to injuries.

The girl has been admitted to the MY Hospital and is critical.

DIG Santosh Kumar Singh, however said that it was not exactly a case of honour killing and the killing was result of an instant dispute between the couple and the girl’s family. “We have rounded up most of the accused,” he added.
