Hundreds of industrialists held sit-ins at several places in Gurgaon on Thursday to oppose the control of the Haryana State Industrial and Infrastructural Development Corporation's (HSIIDC's) over industrial plots.

Many industries declared a half-day holiday. Protests were held at Udyog Vihar, IMT Manesar and Shankar Chowk.

The agitators termed the Estate Management Policy (EMP) 2011 as illegal, saying it has become a tool for the HSIIDC officials to harass them even for minor violations of the norm. According to the industrialists, the HSIIDC's policies only promote speculators and harm industries.

Citing examples of idle factories in IMT Manesar, the protestors said out of 3000 acres of fertile land acquired by the HSIIDC, hardly 500 factories are functioning.

“Due to idle factories at least R1,000 crore of revenue is lost to the state and central governments, resulting in thousands of job cuts. Very soon the new crop is going to rot outside while empty factories populate Manesar Sikri,” Jagdish Kukerja, joint secretary, Manesar Industries Welfare Association (MIWA), said.

The protestors said the EMP 2005 was an illegal document and EMP 2011 is entirely against the growth of industry which gives sweeping powers to few employees of a state PSU.
