A day before the visit of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan early on Thursday reportedly made an unsuccessful attempt to push in terrorists from across the Line of Control (LoC) in Mendhar area of the state's Poonch district.

Defence spokesperson Colonel Munish Mehta said a group of terrorists, who had crossed over to the Indian territory into the Krishna Ghati sector, was spotted by troops.

He said the terrorists fired at the troops after they were challenged and there was a heavy exchange of fire from both the sides.

Sources said Pakistan troops started firing along the forward areas at about 9pm.

The army sources said the firing was to divert attention of the Indian troops and provide cover fire to the terrorists so that they could infiltrate.

The firing continued till 5am, sources said.

Defence sources said the terrorists had probably moved back.

The army is carrying a search operation in the area. Senior police officials have also reached the spot.

Pakistan had fired heavy mortar shells in the forward areas of Poonch district on June 12, a day before the visit of the defence minister Arun Jaitely - his first as the minister.

There was no civilian casualty but a few livestock had died in the firing.

Pakistan has been regularly firing along the LoC in the Rajouri-Poonch sector of Jammu division for the last one week with an aim to push in terrorists.

According to director general of police K Rajendra, only 10 terrorists have managed to sneak in this year till now.
