Infosys’ Bangalore campus bore a festive mood on Monday. Reason? Infoscions were celebrating the return of NR Narayana Murthy, the original poster boy of Indian IT, back to the company as its executive chairman.
Though Murthy had taken charge as chairman on June 1, a Saturday, Monday was technically his first working day. “Second innings” is how he has himself described his latest stint at Infosys.
Murthy, dressed in a black suit and white shirt, arrived at the campus a 9.30 am and was greeted by executive vice chairman S Gopalakrishnan, managing director SD Shibulal and several other top executives.
He held several meetings through the day with senior managers to learn more about the company he had left two years ago.
In his new role, he will relocate from the red brick Heritage Building, where he currently has an office, to the main administrative block at Infosys's Bangalore campus. It is believed that the room next to Shibulal's is being readied for him. Son Rohan, who joined Infosys as Murthy's executive assistant on Monday, arrived separately and quietly got down to work.
“Murthy has been my hero ever since I was in school. It will be an honour to work under his leadership,” said Kavita Singh, a 26-year-old software engineer at Infosys. Singh added that Murthy had already retired when she joined the company a year ago.
The excitement was evident in some of the senior level executives as well. “Employee morale has been low for a long time. Now, following Murthy's return, the environment will get charged up again,” said a long-time manager at Infosys requesting anonymity.
