INLD opposes acquisition of farmland for SEZs

india Updated: Jan 24, 2007 12:10 IST

OPPOSING ACQUISITION of land from farmers for setting up special economic zones (SEZs), Indian National Lok Dal youth wing president Ajay Chautala on Tuesday said his party would support anyone, including Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, agitating over the issue.

“INLD is against acquisition of farmers’ land for SEZs. We will support anybody, including Banerjee, in their fight on the issue,” he told reporters here. Chautala, a Member of Parliament, arrived here to take part in a mass marriage function of the Jat community.

“Land for the SEZs should be allotted in the backward areas,” he said and opposed allotment of land to Reliance Industries for a SEZ in Haryana. Chautala termed unemployment as the biggest challenge before the country and asked young leaders to join hands to address the issue.

About last year’s raids on his family, the son of former Haryana Chief Minister O P Chautala said he was ready for a probe by any agency in the country about his family’s sources of income.
