Inmates, jail staff clash, 2 deputy jailors among 10 injured

Ten persons, including two deputy jailors, were on Wednesday injured when inmates clashed with jail staff following the death of an undertrial.


The undertrial Shafiqurrehman, who was lodged in the district jail in a rape case, suffered a heart attack in the wee hours today and though primary treatment was given, he died, the jail administration said.

When deputy jailors Rakesh Singh and Uday Raj Patel entered the barrack along with doctor Kunwar Manoj and jail staff, inmates alleging laxity attacked them and indulged in brick batting, official sources said.

The two deputy jailors were assaulted with bricks and stones by the inmates and have sustained serious injuries. They have been referred to Varanasi for treatment.

Two inmates - Guddu Tiwari and Randheer, who were helping the jail staff, were also injured in the incident besides some doctors and other personnel.

Singh and Patel, who sustained serious injuries in the clash, have been referred to Varanasi for treatment.

Superintendent of Police Onkar Singh said that post mortem of the dead inmate would be done by a panel of three doctors and videography of the process would be done.

Senior official have reached the spot along with heavy force.
