THE SO-CALLED followers of inspector Radhey Krishna Sharma alias ‘Paaniwale Baba’ blocked Faizabad Road in protest against his transfer from Chinhat police station, here on Sunday.
Inspector Sharma is called ‘paaniwale baba’ as he claims that he can cure various diseases with the help of ‘holy’ water. While the mob stopped traffic movements on the Faizabad Road, a woman follower made an attempt to commit self-immolation protesting against the transfer.
However, a police team reached the spot and dispersed the mob who blocked the road and arrested the woman. Later, the senior cops lodged an FIR against the agitators for causing trouble at a public place. A case was also registered against inspector Sharma for provoking the mob to launch an agitation.
A few days back, Sharma was sent to police lines after two youths had fled with a car from the police station premises in his presence. The car lying abandoned in a area was seized by the police a few days back.
Later, Sharma’s followers had created a ruckus on Faizabad Road demanding posting of Sharma in Chinhat police station. However, the agitators were pacified then.
On Sunday, sequence of events began when about 100 people including women and children gathered outside the flat of Sharma on police station premises. Each follower, carrying a bottle of a mineral water, was requesting Sharma to give them an audience and offer them the holy water.
Sharma, who came out after half-an-hour, provoked the mob saying that he would continue serving them only after he was reinstated at the same police station. He even instigated the mob to stage a violent agitation.
After this, the mob not only raised anti-SSP slogans but also blocked the Faizabad Road. The agitation continued for over five hours.
The cops asked the PAC personnel to apply force and disperse the mob. A woman, who sprinkled diesel on herself and tried to commit self-immolation, was arrested for making attempt to commit suicide.
