TAKING CUE from UP Technical University (UPTU), authorities of Lucknow University have also decided to provide insurance cover to its students from the coming session.

Now in case of accidental death of any student, LU would pay a sum of Rs 1 lakh to his parent and in case of serious injury, the student could get a sum up to Rs 25,000. The executive council in its meeting held on Wednesday has approved this insurance scheme for varsity students.

As per the rule, to bring all students under the cover of the insurance scheme LU would charge Rs 50 from each student. “By doing so we would be able to generate a sum of Rs 17 to Rs 18 lakh that would be kept under Student Accident Relief Fund. To regulate this fund, a governing body would be constituted that will be headed by the LU V-C. There will be a representation of LU Students’ Union (LUSU) also in the body,” the Pro V-C RS Yadav said.

According to Pro V-C, the common students would be immensely benefited from it. But he failed to come out with  any satisfactory answer as how varsity would check the misuse of this fund by student leaders. Initially, LU had invited couple of insurance companies for this purpose. But since they were demanding higher premium, both student leaders and LU officials decided to run the scheme of their own. UPTU had introduced this insurance scheme for its student couple of years back.
