Gupta may quit as fees fixation panel chairman
THE INTERIM fees structure for technical colleges in the State for 2006-07 academic session will be finalised by January 17. The Fees Fixation Committee, headed by Justice Gulab Gupta, will hold a three-day meeting session beginning from January 15 to finalise the interim fees structure.
However, Justice Gupta may not continue as the Fees Fixation Committee chairman after passing of the interim order. Justice Gulab Gupta told the Hindustan Times that no further hearings would be held for fixing the interim fees structure, and based on the hearings conducted till now an interim structure would be finalised. As per the High Court order, he said, the interim structure had to be announced January 25 and the work would be completed within this time.
He, however, indicated that he might not continue as the committee chairman after this interim order. Justice Gupta had earlier expressed dissatisfaction over the facilities provided to the committee and had mentioned that it would not be possible to hold hearings in such circumstances. Talking to the Hindustan Times on Friday, he said he might decide to quit the post.
On a petition of the private technical colleges, the High Court had asked the fees fixation committee to reconsider the proposals of colleges before fixing the fees structure for the current academic session. This was after the colleges took exception to the decision of the Justice Shachindra Committee last year to divide the colleges into grade A and grade B.
The High Court had asked the new fees fixation committee to finalise the interim structure for 2006-07 within four months. Justice Dwivedi Committee had fixed the fees for grade A engineering colleges as Rs 26,000 and grade B colleges as Rs 23,300. The colleges are demanding minimum annual fees of Rs 40,000 for the engineering colleges.
The technical colleges had also filed a contempt petition in the High Court against the delay in the hearings of the Fees Fixation Committee owing to non-provision of facilities by the State Government.
