A Manipur government official has been suspended over the recent fiasco of misinterpretation of the prime minister’s speech during his visit to Manipur on December 3.

Lalrongbawl Hmar, assistant publicity officer of the Directorate of Information and Public Relations was allegedly responsible for the selection of the interpreter, who had caused embarrassment to the state government.

The speech of PM Manmohan Singh, which was in English, was interpreted in Manipuri by one Pastor Tomba of Imphal, who presented wrong numerals and misinterpreted “environmental clearance”.

Pastor Tomba is neither associated with any government department nor has any experience of interpreting speeches of dignitaries. He was familiar with interpreting healing prayers at Christian gatherings, sources said. Hmar has been suspended pending an inquiry by a government order.
