Starting this academic session, there would be 1,500 more seats on offer in the technical and higher education institutes affiliated to the Indraprastha University and polytechnics with the Board of Technical Education.
Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said she has written a letter to the Vice Chancellor of IP University to effect the increase from this academic session only. “If seats are increased by five per cent, the teaching standards won’t be diluted,” Dikshit told the Hindustan Times. She said this was in tune with the increasing demand for these courses.
There are 55 private unaided non-minority institutions of higher, professional and technical education in Delhi and another 10 polytechnics. The proposal is to increase the seats by five per cent.
According to conservative estimates, the move could benefit more than 1500 students who were denied admission. IP University has about 10,000 seats in all and the number is likely to go up by 500.
Dikshit had also talked to the Vice-Chancellor of Delhi University on increasing the seats. The university and the polytechnics are working out the modalities for the increase and the number of students who would benefit.
The CM said that the proposal has nothing to do with the reservation. “There is a lot of migration in Delhi of students from other states. It was thought prudent to increase the seats to accommodate them and also give a fair chance to the students from Delhi.
