Former Indian Premier League (IPL) chairman Lalit Modi was not impressed with the glamorous opening ceremony of the Twenty20 league in Chennai.
"Can't bear to watch it anymore - as on TV it looks appalling. Was really looking forward to seeing something well presented. I am sure the Ratings will show," Modi, who is in London, wrote on the micro-blogging site Twitter.
From a bevy of Bollywood stars, including Amitabh Bachchan, Priyanka Chopra and Kareena Kapoor, as also US singer Katy Perry, the glamour quotient dominated the glitzy opening ceremony of the fifth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) at the YMCA Ground in Chennai on Tuesday night.
Modi said having the opening ceremony in a proper stadium would have been better rather than having it at the YMCA Ground.
"I would have preferred opening ceremony to be in a Stadium atmosphere, before a game. Rather than like a concert like opening. The truth is I am in complete shock - that a show like this can be staged. What was the Bcci thinking when they decided on this format," he tweeted.
Modi was the architect of the IPL and was in charge of it in 2008, 2009 and 2010 before being suspended by the BCCI on charges of financial irregularities.
Omar Abdullah also tweeted: "Can't believe Rajeev Shukla said 'If the beginning is like this you can understand how the tournament will go'. God, I hope he's wrong."
Below are soem tweets expressing different views on the opening ceremony of the IPL.
@rhvijay89 said: "Salman Khan' was the only highlight of the #IPL5 opening Ceremony.. Overall it was a Dull Show."
@bhari4c tweeted: "#IPL5 inaugration was more like a college cultural. Even the latter would have been better. #flop."
"Rajeev Shukla was the hallmark of todays #IPL5 opening ceremony. Salman khan, priyanka, Amitabh & kareena were not enough for #IPL Party, tweeted @utkarsha01.
@manmitt wrote on twitter: "Why were the dancers in #ipl5 opening ceremony wearing yellow? Was it #ipl5 ceremony or #csk ceremony?"
Even Trinamool Congress MP Derek O'Brien was not happy with the glamorous opening ceremony and tweeted: "#ipl5 opening - 5 = one big 0."
During the ceremony, in his signature baritone, Bachchan set the stage alive with a heartwarming poem written by lyricist Prasoon Joshi.
This was the actor's first stage appearance after undergoing abdominal surgery. He looked hale and hearty as he came on stage dressed in velvet coat and trousers, to recite "Janam Yadhi Phir Se Mile".
The 69-year-old was accompanied by dancers from the Shiamak Davar troupe, who described the essence of the poem through their performance.
His routine was followed by Colonial Cousins, DJ Ravi Drums, South African percussionist group 1st Project, Bollywood actors Priyanka Chopra, Kareena Kapoor and Salman Khan.
