UN Secretary General Kofi Annan arrived in Tehran for a two-day visit on Saturday to persuade Iran to suspend uranium enrichment and avoid possible sanction due to its nuclear dispute with the UN Security Council.
Annan is to meet Foreign Minister Manuchehr Mottaki and Iranian chief nuclear negotiator Ali Larijani. On Sunday, he will meet President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and discuss the nuclear row.
The visit comes two days after Iran failed to meet a UN deadline for suspending its enrichment of uranium, paving the way to possible sanctions against the Islamic republic.
Annan is also expected to press Tehran to assist in implementation of the UN-sponsored ceasefire in Lebanon, whose Hezbollah guerrillas are believed to receive major financing and weapons from Iran.
