Irani Club make Lucknow sweat

india Updated: Oct 25, 2006 15:03 IST

Lucknow registered a three-wicket win over Irani Club in the opening match of the Manish Agnihotri memorial all-India cricket tournament being played at the Old Campion grounds in Bhopal on Tuesday.

Chasing a modest total of 213 runs set by Irani Club, the experienced Lucknow seemed to be in trouble as they lost wickets in regular intervals. Adil Baqar played an important innings to bail his team out in the opening tie.

Earlier, Lucknow won the toss and elected to field first. But the Irani team failed to capitalise on the opportunity of fine batting wicket. They lost the top order cheaply. The reckless batting could be gauged from the fact that the team lost two wickets to stumping and run out.

After losing five wickets for 100 runs, Abid Ali and Vinod Halve helped the team in setting a descent target. In his 61-run innings off 40 deliveries, Abid smashed five huge sixes.

Vinod supported him by scoring 40 runs. The team set 213 runs target in 38 overs. For Lucknow, Manoj, Chetan and Dhananjay claimed two wickets each.

Chasing the target of 213 runs in 40 overs, the Lucknow openers started the innings by scoring freely. Adil Baqar, the highest scorer for the team, hit the ball to every corner of the ground. He scored 64 runs.

When the team was on a cruise, it suddenly found itself in trouble. A middle order collapse posed problems for the team. Manoj played cautiously and scored 26 runs. It helped his team win the match.

Adil was declared man of the match.
