Freida Pinto is taking the world by storm, but not India. Despite landing a role in a Woody Allen film and making the front covers of most magazines, the star of Slumdog Millionaire has not become an overnight sensation in her home country.
Even now, after all her red-carpet appearances, Freida’s market value in India is equal to that of little-known actress Prachi Desai, says Manish Porwal, CEO, Percept Talent Management. “At the moment, nothing is happening for Freida,” he adds.
Adman Prahlad Kakkar does not see her becoming “the darling of the Indian advertising industry, at least not at the moment”. Kakkar puts her worth in the Rs 20-25 lakh bracket. Porwal thinks it is at the most Rs 30 lakh.
Ad guru Alyque Padamsee says she will have a market in India if she makes it in Bollywood. But Bollywood is not sure about Freida. Saurabh Varma of Reliance Big Pictures feels she would be limited to arthouse films. “Slumdog has won, but she has to go a long way and justify her success.” For now, he says, Bollywood is watching how things go for Freida.
