The Gujarat government today assured the high court that it will soon issue notification for formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the encounter case of Ishrat Jahan and three others.
The state gave this assurance during the hearing of contempt of court petition filed by Gopinath Pillai, father of Javed Ghulam Sheikh alias Pranesh Pillai who died in the encounter. Pillai had filed the contempt petition against the state government for not complying with the High Court's earlier order.
The Gujarat High Court had on September 23 ordered formation of the SIT to probe the encounter case of June 15, 2004 and directed the state government to issue a notification to the effect within two weeks.
During the hearing of the contempt petition in court of division bench of Justices AM Kapadia and BN Mehta, government pleader today said that the delay was caused as the state government had approached the Supreme Court against the high court order.
However, the Supreme Court had rejected the Gujarat Government plea against the high court order recently.
Gujarat government told the court that as the apex court has rejected its plea, it would issue the notification for formation of SIT in couple of days.
The court has kept further hearing on the contempt petition on Monday.
