It is time to understand that fearsome, global jihad has come to India. A colonial-era police force of havaldars and sahibs cannot stop it. It is time to stop our endless debates, our waffling, our love of governing by committee and proposal and create an ultra-modern, professional force to tackle ultra-modern, professional terrorism. It is time to comprehend that losing our best officers to frontal assaults is a brave act but an utterly hopeless way of fighting modern terror. It is time to learn from our allies — the US, the UK — that global terror cannot be fought without transforming our national security and keeping our diverse communities safe. It is time we stop our political parties from using terror — Hindu or Muslim — to fuel their popularity when they are but fueling a fire that can consume India; that by suspecting those who are not of our religion in a time of great tension and challenge, we are suspecting the notion of a secular, inclusive India and allowing the terrorists to win. It is time to stop saying ‘kindly adjust’ and say ‘Yes, we can’. Because we must.
