Sandeep Singh is devastated. A day after he was shot at, the drag flicker is struggling to come to terms with the injury, ouster from the World Cup and a remote possibility of a long-term impact on his career in the ICU at the PGI here.
The drag-flicker is reconciled to the injury but the fact that he would not be going for the World Cup seems unbearable.
“I know I have lost a huge opportunity… I don’t know how I will cope up with this,” he groaned.
“He would obviously be shattered. He had worked so hard to establish himself in the side.
“Now that he is ready to give his best, this tragedy befell.
“All we can do is pray for his speedy recovery,” said elder brother and Indian Oil player Bikramjit Singh.
“He was pretty excited about the World Cup, especially after his performance in the Azlan Shah tournament.
His game there had given him the belief that he could now make a difference to the team’s fortune. But that was not to be,” moaned father Gurcharan Singh. Even though he is down and out of the team for now, the heart of the youngster still lies with the team, wanting to know who had replaced him in the squad.
“Kaun aya…could you please find it out for me," he requested. When told either Jugraj Singh or Raghunath was likely to fill in, he allowed himself a little smile for the first time and said, “It is a great opportunity for them. I wish them all the best.”
Sandeep also played down the possibility of some ‘conspiracy’ (as reported in some sections of the media). “Kaun karega (who will do it)…I think it was an unfortunate accident,” he sighed.
And when asked if he feared any lasting effect on his career, he gently closed his eyes and turned his head.
Perhaps even the thought is unbearable for him right now.
