SAMAJWADI PARTY MP and former Union minister Beni Prasad Verma on Wednesday claimed the Rae Bareli Lok Sabha by-election result would surprise everyone.
The party has fielded Raj Kumar Chaudhary against Congress president Sonia Gandhi. Chaudhary filed his nomination papers on Tuesday.
Speaking about the candidate, Verma said, “He is my son-in-law, so he will benefit from my name.” He said Muslims and farmers would vote for the SP.
He claimed the UPA Government had betrayed farmers by importing 47 lakh tonnes of wheat at double the price paid to farmers. He also claimed that Vinay Katiyar’s (BJP) candidature was sponsored by the Congress.
He said barring the SP candidate, all others, including Sonia Gandhi, were outsiders.
With an eye on Muslim votes, he lambasted Sonia Gandhi, terming her an “obedient disciple” of George Bush.
Taking note of the Prime Minister’s statement on the Aligarh Muslim University’s minority status, he said, “The Prime Minister should bring an ordinance for it.”
He termed Iran as a traditional friend of India. “Iran is being threatened by the US, it is the duty of India to support it.”
About party general secretary Amar Singh, Verma he said since he was in Abu Dhabi, he could not attend the filing of nomination papers, but would now camp in the district.
On Tuesday, Raj Kumar Chaudhary filed his nomination papers in four sets for the by-election.
He was accompanied by SP general secretary and Energy Minister Shiv Pal Singh Yadav and Beni Prasad Verma to Rae Bareli. The others who were present at the time of filing of nominations included SP leader Banwari Lal Kanchhal, UP Minister Balram Yadav, MLA Ram Lal Akela, SP Rae Bareli district president Ram Naresh Yadav and Rae Bareli District Cooperative Bank chairman Gajadhar Singh.
Answering queries of mediapersons, Shivpal Yadav said, “We will repeat the performance of the 1977 in this by-election.”
Socialist leader Raj Narain had defeated Indira Gandhi in Rae Bareli in 1977.
He said no development took place in Rae Bareli during the last 45 years. “Whatever development you see here was done in the last two years by the Samajwadi Party State Government.”
He further said, “We supported the Congress at the Centre to keep the BJP at bay and today you can see the BJP’s position.”
He further said the Congress-led Central Government was ignoring development and aid to UP. That was why the Congress would lose the by-election to the Samajwadi Party, he claimed.
