Army shot dead three terrorists in an encounter along the line of control (LoC) in Poonch sector on Thursday evening. The army said the terrorists were shot dead when a heavily armed group tried to infiltrate. The bid was made a day after reports that external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj is likely to visit Pakistan next week.
“The army foiled an infiltration bid in Poonch sector at 5pm by killing three heavily armed terrorists. The infiltration bid was detected by surveillance devices and troops. A search is still on,” said defence spokesperson Colonel SD Goswami.
Defence sources said the possibility of more terrorists holed up couldn’t be ruled out as they could take advantage of the darkness. The army has not given details of the site of the encounter, but sources said the it took place in Sabjiyan sector, which is close to Poonch town and from where cross-LoC trade takes place.
A BSF clerk and an official of the education department, Kafilullah, was arrested by the Delhi Police for passing information to Pakistan army from Rajouri district, adjoining Poonch. “There was no supporting fire from the Pakistan army. The encounter was between army and terrorists. It suggests some forces don’t want Indo-Pak talks to start again,” said an army officer.
