india Updated: Aug 22, 2011 18:40 IST

The Jammu and Kashmir State Accountability Commission (SAC) became functional as justice (retired) Yash Paul Nargotra took oath as chairperson of the anti-corruption watchdog in Srinagar.

Justice (rtd) Hakim Imtiyaz Hussain was also administered the oath as a member of the Commission by governor N N Vohra on Sunday.

Justice (retired) Nargotra was appointed chairperson of the Commission for a period of three years earlier this month.

The State Accountability Commission is empowered to look into complaints against public figures including ministers and the chief minister. The Act is a state equivalent of a lokpal.

Speaking at the oath-taking ceremony, Vohra emphasised the need for an early appointment of the second member of the Accountability Commission. Chief minister Omar Abdullah, deputy chief minister Tara Chand and Assembly speaker Mohammad Akbar Lone attended the ceremony.
