Jammu and Kashmir Assembly

Jammu and Kashmir Assembly on Wednesday passed a privilege motion against former army chief General VK Singh who had made allegations that the army pays off ministers in the state.

The assembly wants to summon and question Gen Singh regarding the allegations. The motion was supported by members of ruling National Conference and the entire Opposition.

A report in a national English daily in September claimed that a secret army intelligence unit, set up during Gen Singh's tenure as the chief of Army staff, paid money to a Jammu and Kashmir minister to topple the Omar Abdullah-led government in 2010. The revelations were reportedly made during an internal army inquiry.

While the former army chief has rejected the allegations, he later clarified that funds had been given to many ministers in the state right since Independence to get certain jobs done. The ruling National Conference has demanded a CBI inquiry into the allegations.
