Vice President Mohammed Hamid Ansari, People’s Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti , Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Home Minister Rajnath Singh and National Conference leader Omar Abdullah reached the All India institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi after hearing about the demise of Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also expected to visit the AIIMS later in the day.
Expressing grief over the demise of Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed, Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Thursday said that the nation has lost a great leader.
She recalled Mufti’s association with the Congress party and said that his contribution as a humanist to public life in various capacities will be remembered forever.
79-year-old Sayeed was admitted in the AIIMS for the past 15 days and was on ventilator.
The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) said he breathed his last at 9.10 a.m.
“We tried to revive him but failed to,” an AIIMS spokesperson told Hindustan Times
Doctors said that the death occurred due to multiple organ failure.
Sayeed, who was born in 1936 in Bijbehara, Jammu and Kashmir, had previously served as Chief Minister from 2002 to 2005. He was also the Home Minister of India from December 1989 to November 1990.
Sayeed had founded the Jammu and Kashmir People’s Democratic Party in 1999
