A militant and a securityman were killed in two separate encounters in Jammu and Kashmir's Kupwara district on Monday.
"A militant was killed in Kunda Nar area of Keran Sector along the Line of Control and one soldier was injured at Baran Gali, Lolab, who later succumbed to his injuries," said an army spokesperson based in Srinagar.
The fresh encounters are the latest addition to the series of gunfights between infiltrators and the army in the state this month. Five militants and three soldiers have been killed since Saturday. Besides, J-K is also on the boil over ceasefire violations from across the border.
According to the army, body of the slain militant along with an AK-47 rifle has been recovered. His identity is yet to be ascertained. The operation is still in progress.
During the army's search operations at Kunda Nar of Keran Sector, terrorists hiding in the area opened fire on securitymen. The area was cordoned and the terrorists were effectively engaged.
"The Rashtriya Rifles unit operating at Baron Gali, Lolab, established contact with the terrorists on 25 August. The terrorists were engaged and during the exchange of fire between army troops and the terrorist, Rastriya Rifle soldier Lance Naik Dhananjay Kumar was critically injured," the army said.
The soldier succumbed to his injuries later. The operations are still in progress. The Northern Army Commander Lt Gen DS Hooda commended the troops for the sustained operations.
