Unidentified gunman injured a policeman on Thursday morning in the district court complex in Shopian district of south Kashmir. Panic spread in the court complex when a pistol-borne youth shot at a cop and fled the spot. The injured has been identified as constable Mohammad Ashraf from Srinagar.
According to eyewitnesses, the cop was busy frisking people at the court entrance along with his two other colleagues when the incident took place. The militant also tried to snatch the rifle from the cop but failed.
"As scuffle ensued, other cops rushed towards the gate. Sensing the threat, the youth took out a pistol and shot Mohammad Ashraf and fled the spot," said an eyewitness. The injured cop was rushed to Srinagar's SMHS hospital where his condition is said to be very critical. Search operation has been launched in the area to nab the culprits.
Meanwhile, an armyman critically injured in Wednesday's militant attack in Shopian succumbed to his injuries at an army hospital in Srinagar last night. He has been identified as Anish T of army's 62 Rashtriya Rifles unit. The jawan was injured in firing by militants when the army cordoned an area at Imam Sahib in Shopian on Wednesday.
