A mother of two allegedly killed her six-month-old daughter so that she could take care of her three-and-half-year-old son, police said on Tuesday.
Police arrested Ritu Ahuja (27), who has admitted to killing her daughter Arohi and dumping her body near a temple.
Ritu was arrested after police scanned recording of CCTV footage which showed her taking the girl in a baby bag and driving away on a two-wheeler on September 7.
When she returned, the bag was missing.
She had filed a complaint with police claiming that she found the baby “missing” from her home after she came back from a bath.
Police later recovered the baby’s skeletal remains from the Bargi hills. The remains have been sent for DNA tests for confirming the infant’s identity, deputy inspector general of police (Jabalpur) Makarand Deouskar said.
Police are awaiting forensic tests to ascertain the cause of the baby’s death.
She allegedly told police that her son often remains ill and she was unable to pay attention to him because of Arohi, he said.
The woman’s husband is a businessman based in Jabalpur, around 350 km from Bhopal.
