In latest attack against BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, Congress election coordinator Jairam Ramesh drew a parallel between him and rape-accused Asaram Bapu, leaving the BJP fuming on “below the belt attack”.
Talking to reporters, Ramesh slammed Modi over the latter’s comments on Lokayukta and said, they were akin to “Asaram talking about virginity”.
In a recent rally, Modi tried to corner the Congress on the Lokpal issue and asked why it did not implement the Lokayukta Act in Uttarakhand by pushing for the Lokpal bill in Parliament. The Uttarakhand Act was brought during the tenure of the BJP government, he had said.
Pointing out that Modi had not appointed a Lokayukta for 10 years, Ramesh said, “A guy who didn’t appoint a Lokayukta for 10 years is hardly the person to speak about Lokayukta. For 10 years, he didn’t appoint a Lokayukta and he is giving ‘updesh’ (sermons) on Lokayukta. This is like Asaram talking about virginity.”
Asaram, accused of raping a minor, is in judicial custody following his arrest earlier in September.
An angry BJP said Ramesh’s analogy is reprehensible. “We condemn Jairam Ramesh’s dirty remark on Modi. It’s shameful,” said party spokesperson Prakash Javadekar.
