After his stints as the BJP election incharge in Gujarat and Karnataka saw it registering convincing wins, senior party leader Arun Jaitely has now been appointed the incharge for Jammu and Kashmir assembly polls due later this year. Jaitely, a General Secretary of the party, is also a Rajya Sabha member.

In Gujarat elections, Chief Minister Narendra Modi returned to power after BJP won 117 seats out of the 182 seats while the Karnataka elections in May 2008 witnessed the party recording its first victory in a southern state by securing a safe 110 seats out of 224 seats.
