Janpath turns 25!

THESE LIGHTS are inviting. They are signifying that Janpath Market is celebrating its silver jubilee. The market came into existence 1981 and has a story to tell. It came out of displaced shops from Hazratganj that were considered encroachments. These ?unauthorised? shops were removed by then administrator RR Shah with assurance that the displaced shopkeepers will be rehabilitated in the place which now is Janpath. For quite some time, while the constructions were going on, the shopkeepers did their business from makeshift tin-sheds.

THESE LIGHTS are inviting. They are signifying that Janpath Market is celebrating its silver jubilee. The market came into existence 1981 and has a story to tell. It came out of displaced shops from Hazratganj that were considered encroachments. These ‘unauthorised’ shops were removed by then administrator RR Shah with assurance that the displaced shopkeepers will be rehabilitated in the place which now is Janpath.

For quite some time, while the constructions were going on, the shopkeepers did their business from makeshift tin-sheds. The market has about 300 shops and together they make it a complete market. Interestingly, Janpath turned out to be the first shopping complex project of the LDA and first shopping complex construction by  Rajkaiya Nirman Nigam. “For 15 days the shops here are offering festive discount, food fest, and some entertainment,” said Harish Kapoor, Chairman, Janpath Market Association.
