One CRPF jawan was killed and three others grievously injured when a hand grenade exploded during a training session at Bhud-Mandalya firing range in Raipur Rani block of the district on Friday morning.

According to the local sub-division magistrate Sharanjit Kaur, the accident happened when a hand grenade went off a moment after it was hurled in the air during a demonstration.

The injured were rushed to the PGI Hospital in Panchkula.

According to official information, the CRPF contingent had come from Dharampur in Himachal Pradesh for the training. Kaur said that the CRPF was looking into the reasons and circumstances behind the mishap.

In the past, para-military forces personnel have been casualties to such mishaps. A hand grenade explosion killed a head constable of the ITBP and hurt nine others, on May 2, 2008. The same year on March 13, three jawans from 111 Battalion of CRPF, were killed and 11 others hurt during a similar practice session at the same firing range.
