Jain community leaders in Guna district of northern Madhya Pradesh have decided not to allow women wearing “western” attire, especially jeans and top, from entering temples.

The dress code diktat for Jain temples in the district also extends to T-shirts. Cleric Aryika Gurumati Mata said women should be dressed decently while coming to temples.

She added that women not wear make-up, particularly lipstick, when coming to pray at temples.

The community’s leaders have decided to abide by the decision taken by religious heads. A Jain community spokesperson said boards would soon be put up at all the temples warning girls wearing jeans, tops and T-shirts against entering the premises. “If parents still send their children to temples in such dresses, action will be taken.”

The spokesperson did not specify what action the violators would face.
