A militant of Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) was killed and an army officer injured in a fierce gun-battle in Pulwama district of Kashmir on Sunday.
The gunfight broke out at Aglar Kandi village, 40 km from Srinagar, on Sunday when the army and police launched a joint operation and raided a house. A cordon was thrown around the house following a tip-off about presence of two to three JeM militants there.
“The militants, believed to be two in number, were asked to surrender. But they fired at the troops that had surrounded the house, which triggered a gunfight,” a police officer said.
“One militant belonging to Jaish-e-Mohammed was killed in the operation and the other militant is still engaging the forces in the gunfight,” the police officer said.
An army captain was also injured in the encounter and was shifted to base hospital here for treatment. A residential house, where the militants had taken shelter, was also damaged. The gunbattle was on till the last reports came. Security forces are trying to ensure that all the hiding militants are neutralised.
