A jeweller was shot dead by two unidentified persons at Assandh town, about 40 ms from here, in the wee hours of Thursday.
The 38-year-old deceased Narinder Kumar was killed soon after he opened his shop Deepak Fancy Jewellers in main market here.
According to police sources, Kumar was shot from a close range and died on the spot. It was not confirmed if the assailants robbed the shop.
Sources said that at least two persons fled the spot after committing the crime.
On the basis of accounts of the eyewitnesses, the police have prepared sketches to identify the accused.
Deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Sham Lal Kaushik said that the entire area had been cordoned off and special teams had been dispatched in Karnal and adjoining Kaithal district to nab the accused.
Meanwhile, protesting the killing, shops in the entire Assandh town were shut. Residents blocked roads at Jind and Salwan intersection and demanded an immediate arrest of the killers.
