It’s official now. Legislator Geeta Koda, the wife of Jharkhand ex-chief minister Madhu Koda, will represent the Jai Bharat Samanta Party (JBSP), a party she is heading in the state, in the Lok Sabha polls from Singhbhum. Singhbhum is situated in the southern part of the state.

Her husband too had contested the 2009 polls on the JBSP ticket and won with a convincing margin. This election, Madhu Koda has decided to vacate his seat for his wife in the wake of the pending cases against him being probed by the CBI, enforcement directorate (ED) and income tax (IT) department.

“We have taken this decision consciously after consulting our party workers and leaders across all blocks and sub-divisions,” the ex-chief minister said, adding, “almost 90% of party workers were adamant that we do not shift allegiance to any party as the JBSP is more popular in the area and voters are acquainted with the symbol.”

There were strong speculations that Geeta might join the Congress or the All-India Trinamool Congress (AITC) to contest her maiden Lok Sabha polls from Singhbhum. Her husband claimed that while talks with the Congress failed, there was no dialogue at all with the AITC.

Koda, who faces three cases related to disproportionate assets, money laundering and tax evasion being probed by three different agencies, said that he is not contesting because he believes in women’s empowerment.

When asked what party she would extend her support to after her victory, Geeta said that she would take a call on that only after the results are declared and the process for government formation starts at the Centre. “I am told there is a Narendra Modi wave sweeping the country, but where is that visible here.”
