A CRPF jawan accused of rape turned down his victim’s marriage offer for withdrawal of case and opted to go to jail, Jharkhand’s Ghatsila police said.
Jadunath Murmu, 23, who was posted with Chhattisgarh’s 228th CRPF battalion, allegedly raped a girl from his village in Dumaria block. In her FIR at the Dumaria police station on October 4 last year, the girl alleged that Murmu sexually exploited her on the pretext of marriage.
“The girl’s family had got a band party for the marriage but Murmu turned down the proposal. He has been sent to the Ghatsila jail,” said Dumuria police station in-charge Bikrant Kumar. “The girl stressed on at least a court marriage but he denied.”
Kumar said Murmu was arrested from the Sukna CRPF camp in Chhattisgarh on Saturday.
“The case came to my notice after the girl threatened self immolation,” said Mosaboni deputy superintendent of police Ajit Kumar Bimal. “The arrest should have been immediate. Departmental inquiry will be done against the Mosabani police station. There was a court order too.”
Parents and relatives of both parties went to the police station to convince Murmu, but in vain. Kumar said the case could have ended if Murmu agreed.
