A man's one-sided love for a woman took a bizarre turn when he bit off her tongue minutes before her marriage with another man in Odisha's Ganjam district.

The incident occurred on Monday near a temple in Bhanjanagar, about 150km south of Bhubaneswar, where the wedding was to be held, police said on Tuesday.

The 30-year-old bride was alone in a vehicle when Sukanta Swain barged into the vehicle, forcibly kissed her and tried to take her away. When she resisted and cried for help, he bit off her tongue.

She was rescued by people who heard her cry for help.

Thirty seven-year-old Swain – a married man with two children – was handed over to the police by the crowd.

The woman was rushed to the local government hospital where her she was operated upon. Later, her marriage was solemnised as per schedule.

Swain and the woman hail from the same village near Bhanjanagar.
