Police on Monday arrested a person for murdering a 23-year- old Chamba girl, who was found dead under mysterious circumstances, at Itchi village on the outskirts of Kangra town on Saturday.
Prime suspect, Chandersh Kumar, who was a colleague of the deceased and frequent visitor to her room, was arrested on Monday from his native village in Hamirpur district.
Deceased Rohini (name changed) ,who was working with Reliance company in the marketing wing, was found dead in her rented accommodation with her room locked from outside. She was a resident of a village near Sinhuta of district Chamba.
"It is being suspected that the girl had an affair with another boy and jealous colleague strangulated her to death," said an official on condition of anonymity.
Police official, however, said that Kumar till hasn't confessed to the crime and interrogations are still on.
According to the mother of the deceased she had talked to her daughter last time on Friday, January 11 last week. Since then her mobile phone was not reachable.
When the family members contacted one of her neighbours, he hinted that she might have been outside as the room was locked.
The girl had been living in the rented room for last three years. Police told that her cousin, a student of ITI, too was living in the same room for last one year and had gone to her ancestral home on January 11.
The victim's mother also got in touch with the accused, Chandresh Kumar after she didn't get any response from her daughter.
Kumar had told the family that Rohini had to appear in some interview at Dharamsala and might have gone there and said he was at his home at Hamirpur.
The victim's mother and cousin came to Kangra on Saturday to know her whereabouts.
After waiting for some time they broke open the lock and found her body lying on the bed. They then informed the police.
The body was taken into custody and autopsy was conducted at local hospital, report of which is still awaited. Police said that postmortem report will reveal whether she was sexually assaulted before strangulating or not.
Police officials however refused to disclose further details of the case due to investigation obligations.
"A case has been registered under section 302 against Chandresh Kumar," told an official, adding that investigations were on.
Meanwhile, Police sources told that inquires at the spot revealed that there were injury mark on the neck. "The exact time of the murder is also yet to be investigated," told the sources.
Some eyewitnesses told that Kumar was seen at victim's residence on Friday evening. He had left around 8 in the evening.
