The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, the only road link between Kashmir and the rest of the country, remained closed for vehicular traffic for the second consecutive day on Sunday, due to heavy snowfall near the Jawahar Tunnel and Patnitop, officials said in Jammu.
"The highway closed for second day today due to heavy snowfall at Jawahar tunnel and Patnitop. The road has been very slippery and at several places there are traffic jams," Police Control Room (PCR) officials told PTI.
Due to closure of the highway, over 980 vehicles, including 270 passenger vehicles are stranded at various places on the road, they said, adding that Border Road Organisation (BRO) is working round the clock to clear the snow and restore traffic.
Heavy traffic jams were seen at Udhampur, Samroli, Kud, Patnitop, Batote and Ramban areas, they said.
Due to a blanket of fog enveloping Jammu plains, there was a slow movement of vehicles, they said, adding that over 13 trains were delayed by two to six hours. Meanwhile, an unidentified person died due to cold in Bari Brahama area of Jammu district and the body was recovered and shifted to the GMC hospital.
