Bapi Mahto, one of the main accused in the May 28 Jnaneswari Express derailment, was today grilled by CBI and the state police after he was flown in here on a transit remand granted by a Jharkhand court.
Mahto was flown to Midnapore Police Lines by helicopter after Saraikela Chief Judicial Magistrate Indrason Yadav granted the CBI's prayer and directed that he and his cousin Vimal Mahto, arrested along with him yesterday from a guest-house at Adityapur in Jamshedpur, be produced before the Jhargram court by June 23.
Police said the duo would be produced before the court tomorrow.
The entire police lines was turned into a fortress with armed policemen and para-military forces on guard while the grilling of Mahto was on.
Mahto is facing charges under Section 150 (maliciously wrecking or attempting to wreck train) and Section 151 (damage or destruction of certain railway properties) of the Railway Act, CBI Special Public Prosecutor Partha Tapaswi said in Saraikela.
He is also charged under section 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder) and section 120B (criminal conspiracy) and under the Indian Explosives Act among others, he said.
The CBI had earlier announced a reward of Rs one lakh for information leading to Bapi Mahato's arrest.
It had also announced a reward of the same amount for providing information of PCPA convenor Asit Mahto and senior PCPA leader Umakant Mahto, accused in the train derailment which left 148 passengers dead.
