In a shocking incident, a jobless and depressed man allegedly killed his wife and 18-month-old daughter before hanging himself at his house in Noida's Sector 27 on Tuesday morning.
According to police, Shivanand Sundriyal, 29, was found hanging from a ceiling fan in his room, while his 27-year-old wife Hina and daughter Akriti were found "either strangled or poisoned". They were rushed to a hospital only to be declared dead on arrival.
The police have registered a case and detained eight persons in connection with the deaths. Five of them have been named in a suicide note (which talks of mental trauma by a set of people) recovered from the victims’ house and the rest three accompanied Shivanand on a recent rail trip.
Hina, who was found lying on the floor with the infant clinging on to her, worked as accountant at a school run by her father, PK Jain, in Sector 29. Jain said her daughter's was a love marriage, which didn't work out. Jain alleged that Shivanand often beat her daughter.
"Shivanand, who lived with his family in a three-storey house (E 225), had been unemployed for a year. His father said Shivanand had been depressed after leaving a call centre job," said a police officer.
"We have also recovered a suicide note. Prima facie, he either strangled his wife and daughter or poisoned them. The bodies have been sent for autopsy," the officer said.
The man lived with his wife and daughter on the second floor of the house, while his parents, sister, brother and sister-in-law lived on the first floor. They had let out the ground floor.
The incident came to light when Shivanand's brother went upstairs looking for him. "I peeped inside and found him hanging. Soon police came and broke into the room," he said.
According to the police, the number of suicide cases in Noida has gone up by about 10 to 15%.
