Joint meeting shows RSS directly controls Modi govt: CPI-M

Prime Minister Narendra Modi

The CPI(M) on Friday attacked Union Ministers for presenting their report cards at the ongoing joint meeting of RSS-BJP saying their act is an affront to democracy and the exercise 'clearly' shows the Sangh Parivar was in 'direct control' of the government.

Accusing RSS and its affiliates of threatening principles of secularism even as it tries to turn India into a 'Hindu Rashtra', the party also charged Prime Minister Narendra Modi of 'patronising and legitimising' such efforts. "The detailed reports of their works being given by Union Ministers to RSS leaders at their joint meeting in the capital is an affront to Indian democracy.

"It clearly shows RSS is not merely the remote control but is in the direct control of this BJP Government which acts as the RSS' political arm," the party said in a statement.

Referring to RSS' alleged agenda of turning India into a 'Hindu Rashtra', CPI(M) said the objective is against fundamental tenets of a secular, democratic Indian Constitution. The current exercise being undertaken by Ministers 'violates' the Constitutional oath of office and secrecy they have sworn to uphold, the Left party said.

"As it is, the basic principles of secularism are being threatened by RSS and its Hindutva front organisations on a daily basis. Many of those attending this meeting continue to make communally inflammatory speeches.

"Instead of curbing these elements, the Prime Minister and Central Government are patronizing and legitimizing such efforts," the CPI(M) said, adding it 'strongly' condemns and opposes the blatant violation of constitutional norms.

The three-day meeting began in New Delhi on September 2 with RSS head Mohan Bhagwat, BJP chief Amit Shah and senior Union Ministers showing up at the event and sharing measures taken by them in relation to issues raised by the RSS and affiliates.
